Enough With the Sequels Already
Has anyone else noticed the trend in movies these days? It seems that instead of giving us fresh and new story lines, the studios are falling back onto their proven safety nets. Sometimes that’s satisfying. The new Indiana Jones movie is something that I have to admit that I’m excited about. Sometimes, it’s just depressing. Think Sylvester Stalone doing Rambo. Need I say more?
It seems as though the public deserves a little more credit from the movie studios. After all, we do like fresh ideas. While Spiderman 3 might be fun to watch, give us some more choices than sequels and prequels. Give us a fresh story line with some new characters to bend our minds around.
Star Wars is known as a great enterprise. However, even most diehard fans will admit that the newest installments are not good at all.
Psycho was a superb movie. Of course, I’m speaking of the original. It never needed to be remade. There should be a commandment in Hollywood. Thou Shalt Not Touch Alfred Hitchcock, for Thall Will Do a Sub-par Job.
Do we need three Jurassic Parks to get the point that those are some crazy dinosaurs? I mean, come on now, how many people do we really have to see consumed by fake looking creatures before we put the popcorn down and look for a new indie flick?
Does Rocky really need to win all of those fights in order to be the greatest? Does he really even need to fight at all? After a few installments of the Rocky franchise, I think everyone was ready to see him get beat down.
Basically, I’m going to sum it up like this. The viewing audience at the movie theater is an intelligent bunch (for the most part-does not include little boy that throws popcorn at people’s hair). We can take plot. We can take new plot. We can even take plot that has twists and turns. Trust us. Introduce us to some new characters. Let us learn to love them. We need an icon now. We need to stop borrowing from the past.

You’re so right. Either they do an unnecessary sequel or a remake of an old film or concept. Reintroducing Nancy Drew for ex., or this Speed Racer thing. Can’t they come up with new characters and ideas for the current generation? I guess it’s just easier to revamp something old, but it’s tiresome. Enough already!

You’re right! No wonder people watch so much reality tv. At least, they get new characters each season.
